Students from DMU's School of Engineering and Sustainable Development started their #DMUglobal trip to New York with some special insight in to the city’s famous skyline.
The students were given a private tour of the museum by the gallery manager who shared his knowledge on the engineering feats behind the tallest skyscrapers in New York and the early work to develop the very first skyscrapers in the city.
Mechatronics student, Abdullah Faisal, said: “This trip might give me and advantage in terms of employability, for example that might give me an edge on other applicants.
“Seeing the history of skyscrapers and how such a lot has been achieved in a short period makes me appreciate how advanced we are. Learning new information about structures expanded my knowledge in other engineering disciplines, which is great.
"This trip will really support me in my studies by keeping me updated in the state of technology and learning new information. They even talked about how they counter tornados and floods which has been really useful for my studies."
The visit and private tour were arranged by senior lecturer Vijay Pakka to give students the opportunity to find out more about some of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers.
Vijay said: “They can ask the guide specific questions and they can interact closely and have the museum to themselves.”
New York is renowned for its famous skyline featuring well-known skyscrapers including the Empire State Building.
The museum features models, videos, and infographics as well as a 40-foot long mural on the History of Height from the pyramids to contemporary constructions.
Students learned about the evolution of the skyscraper and as well as taking time to appreciate the development of the World Trade Center and other significant buildings from across the world.

Student Tanvir Choudhury said: “I feel proud to be part of this study trip. When I go for a job I can say that I have been part of this wonderful experience and I’ve been to the city of New York. It’s something that I think will help me in the future.
"I think New York is one of the best cities I’ve ever been to. I’ve only been here a couple of days and I already feel part of the society. It makes you feel welcome."
The museum visit is part of the itinerary created for third-year students from DMU's School of Engineering and Sustainable Development to further their knowledge and understanding of their subject area.
The group will also have the opportunity to spend time exploring New York, taking in the famous skyline and take part in cultural activities.
