Varsity 2024 roundup

The 2024 Varsity series has come to an end and while the overall result didn’t go in our favour, we are still incredibly proud of the passion, dedication and growth that teams in both universities demonstrated.

Varsity Lacrosse

From Friday 15 March to Wednesday 20 March, DMU and the University of Leicester fielded teams across 43 fixtures in a range of sports, including basketball, football, hockey and two rugby union showcases at Mattioli Woods Welford Road Stadium.

This year, spectator engagement was placed at the heart of the series and fans were treated to performances from the Bangra Society and the Cheer and Dance Society. Leicester Tigers Women’s team and the players from the Leicester Riders Basketball squad were special guests for player’s workshops to encourage students to learn how to cope under pressure and stay confident.

Ultimately, the University of Leicester defended its crown and won the series 31-12 – a big congratulations to our city neighbours.

DMU secured victories in:

Futsal men’s 1st

Volleyball 1st women

Volleyball 2nd men

Football 2nd men

Football 3rd men

Running (athletics)

Hockey (mixed)

Archery (mixed)

Dodgeball 1st men

Rochelle Gough, Sports Communication and Workforce Officer, said: “Varsity demonstrated how a university can come together as a team to support its players, spectators, and the culture. The support from spectators has made a huge difference this year. Across events, there has been an increase in the level of engagement and it has been truly inspirational to see the dedication of friends, family, and fans to support all competitors.

“The atmosphere was electric, and Monty's appearance only added to the excitement, lifting the crowd's spirits.

“Although DMU didn't win Varsity overall, it was great to see those moments of pure joy from and teamwork behind all the hard work put into practice.”
